There is a great variety of stony meteorites, each witnessing a different history. Some meteorites are almost unaltered since they were first formed and hence consist of the very first material that accumulated in our solar system. They are composed of chondrules, the first droplets in space that later accreted to an asteroid.
Others have gone through various degrees of metamorphosis, from just slight heating to complete melting. Some have been erupted from extra-terrestrial volcanoes; others have formed deep inside an asteroid and were only exposed after the asteroid was destroyed in a collision with another celestial body. Stony meteorites can originate from asteroids in the asteroid belt, from dwarf planets like Vesta, from our own moon or from Mars.
